Original Accel World anime and Sword Art Online movie are in the works

Reki Kawahara, author of Sword Art Online and Accel World, took to the stage at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2015 to announce that there will be a new original Accel World anime as well as an original Sword Art Online movie.

This is no surprise for the behemoth that is Sword Art Online and, with the novels apparently coming to an end next year, this will act as the perfect bridge until A-1 Pictures can adapt the rest of the series entirely. What’s more surprising is Accel World: Infinite Burst because even though I adore Accel World, the first anime didn’t sell as well as expected despite the light novels consistently charting high in Japan, but I’m happy to see a new anime greenlit with Sunrise returning to animate it. It’ll feature new characters alongside the already established cast, as well as a new story made for the anime.

With volume 19 releasing soon in Japan, it’s clear that Accel World still has a huge following. Reki also revealed the cover art for the 19th volume. The series is currently licensed and published by Yen Press in the UK and US with volume 5 releasing next month, so you should totally pick it up!

There’s also a trailer for the SAO movie although it’s scarce on both details and new footage.

I’m excited for both of these and it’s certainly a good time to be a Reki Kawahara fan! Hopefully his latest work, The Isolator, gets an anime adaptation when there’s enough content as that’s also fantastic.

Spread the love!
