Hot Rice Anime Round Up – issue 5

After January taking all the hot new animes released this year, the downpour of anime turns into a trickle of series and movies – but with some gems we know and love! Join me as I go through whats worth a watch, what isn’t – and why you should check them out or avoid.

First up – Yōkai Watch

A Supernatural comedy series based on Level 5’s 3DS game. Not to everyone’s taste but I do love an anime with a cold-hearted female love interest, battering a poor boys confidence. Of course this leads him to find a haunted Gatcha-pon machine and to unleash some friendly ghosts…

Sakura Trick

This is more of a guilty pleasure anime following a school romance to two best friends, Haruka and Yuu – both female ?! A Slice of Life yuri anime with lots of holding hands and awkward hidden kisses, nothing adult is covered in this anime so don’t be alarmed.

A slice of life with a dash of yuri !

Go! Go! 575
Another anime adapted from a game, in this case a music rhythm game? Go! Go! 575 adapts the Project 575 games for PlayStation Vita and iOS, the girls talk i, haiku and tanka poems through the five minute episode and do random things.

Based on a Vita game

Giovanni no Shima/ Giovanni’s Island

A special animated movie to commemorate 50th anniversary of Japan Association of Music Enterprises (JAME). The story is set after World War 2 following the lives of two young boys from Shikotan Island. Inspired by true events only available to Japan at the moment.

Bodacious Space Pirates: Abyss of Hyperspace

A movie following the series end. The film returns with Tatsuo Satō as director and screenwriter. We follow student Marika Kato leading her school’s space yacht club, working part time at Cafe Lamp, and being the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. In this movie she has a new adventure featuring a hyperspace race between pirates and one young boy.

Tiger & Bunny: The Rising

The film takes a U-turn from the series and revolve’s around a mystery that happens on the day of the “Justice Day” festival that celebrates Sternbild’s legendary goddess, lots of comedy and action to look forward to from the lovable duo.
