First ARMS Grand Final Was Pretty Hype

Nintendo’s new, colourful, Switch exclusive fighting game ARMS is due out next month. But in Japan, the game has already had its first full tournament, and the first ARMS grand final was pretty hype to watch, showing the game does (as we predicted) have legs (or should that be arms) as a legit fighter in tournament play.

The 10 minute Ribbon Girl mirror match is pretty exhilarating to watch. The mirror is pretty literal, as both players seemed to favour the same glove load-outs, but on opposite hands. Perhaps that was easiest to counter? The match is a tense game of reading one another, throwing out counters, and dodging and blocking all over the place.

Environmental hazards also seem to play a big role in the matches too, with the fighters hiding behind columns. It’s not quite clear yet whether Ribbon Girl will be truly top tier, or whether she’s just the easiest to get to grips with initially, this being a tournament before the game is released after all.

But it’s looking like there will be some pretty exciting strategies to come out of ARMS when everyone has some more time with it. The full game will support both motion inputs and button inputs. It’ll be pretty interesting to see what the uptake in the scene will be like.

Between this and Splatoon, Nintendo are really catering to some pretty varied and great competitive scenes. You have to wonder when some news on Smash on the system will come, as it surely will — though that could just be an enhanced version of the one on Wii U and 3DS.

ARMS releases on Nintendo Switch on 16th June 2017.

Spread the love!
