Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Gamescom Gameplay

If there is one thing I hate about Gamescom it’s waiting in line for over an hour, just to find out it’s a gameplay video I have already seen during E3. I was expecting the same thing for MGSV, but I was pleasantly surprised. Despite featuring the same mission and objectives as in the E3 video, things somehow ended up being drastically different.

The entire presentation focused on proving that you can play any mission not only in multiple ways, but also showing that multiple playthroughs can play out totally differently depending on your previous actions. This means that there will be a lot of replay value to be had, as each mission will be different even when you play it multiple times.

Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain Gamescom Gameplay

The new gameplay video shows how an area that previously had soldiers is now deserted, with a Jeep coming from the distance. Big boss then makes the horse poop on the road and hides in the bushes. This makes the Jeep spin out of control, stunning all the soldiers inside and allowing you to take care of them. These scenes along with the return of the iconic Metal Gear box inject a good dose of humor missing from Ground Zeroes.

Once Big Boss arrived at his destination he decided to infiltrate the base from another point, this time during the night. Enemies now wear helmets because in the E3 playthrough the Big Boss made too many head shots influencing how enemies will react. All this will force the player to plan out new tactics since previously ones might not be viable the second time through. Big Boss now opted to destroy the power generator leaving the base in the dark. Soon after this an enemy helicopter arrives preventing him from escaping with the Jeep. So in order to destroy it he places an explosive on the Jeep and lifts it into the air using a fulton (balloon) and detonates it as it’s flying into the air. As in Grounds Zeroes, The Phantom Pain allows for a lot of messing around with different elements.

One of the most unique elements introduced into Metal Gear Solid V is the multiplayer mode. In the E3 playthrough Konami showed off how each player can have a base, which is fully customizable with items and people collected throughout the missions using the fulton. During Gamescom we were shown the other side to this; that is how you can infiltrate another player’s base and steal resources, weapons and even recruit enemy soldiers. In order to counter this players can place security systems wherever they want including cameras, turrets, guards and even defend their base personally.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will have a map 300 times larger than that off Ground Zeroes and is planed to come out for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and surprisingly even Windows.

To me The Phantom Pain is a dream come true as I can finally spend hours planing out a perfect infiltration and at the same time mess around with the same mission over and over again.
