Rune Factory 4 cancelled for Europe

MarvelousAQL Europe today announced that Rune Factory 4 – the Harvest Moon / Fantasy RPG hybrid from Neverland – has been cancelled in Europe. Announced last year for a ‘Spring’ release, it’s been pretty quiet on the news front – and there’s been much speculation as to the future of the release.

MarvelousAQL’s statement reads as follows;

“We regret to inform you that the European release of Rune Factory 4 for Nintendo 3DS has been cancelled.

While MarvelousAQL has made every effort to secure the title’s release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time.

MAQL and MAQL Europe would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm for their European releases. Please look forward to announcements on new MAQL titles over the coming months.”

While no mention has been given as to why Rune Factory 4 will not be coming out – it’s a pretty safe bet to suggest it’s down to the closure of developer Neverland Co – who filed for bankruptcy late last year.

Sad news indeed – not least because Rune Factory 4 was widely considered an excellent RPG, and one of the series highlights. Not much in the way of consolation to EU fans – but perhaps a picture of the RF4 girls frolicking in a river will help ease your disappointment?

Well fuck you Nintendo. If it wasn’t for your retarded region locking I could still have a chance to play this.

    • James Bleak

buy a NA 3ds.. you obviously speak english

      • TheUberSelkie

Oh, so I’m supposed to justify spending £200 – roughly two-three weeks of my part-time job’s wages not subtracting things like living costs- on a console which I’m only ever using to play a single game now? Would you?

We don’t live in the dark ages anymore, yet Nintendo is happy to sit by and let EU get shafted to all hell and back by producers. It’s been that way since the beginning of time; but at least previously we could combat travesties like this by importing.

        Not any more.

Yea, I’m in eu too, I won’t spend 200dollars to buy a new nintendo, screw them T.T i hate region lock

This could have been the first Rune Factory game I would’ve gotten into. Unfortunately, hearing this, this only proves that regional lockdown is something that needs to be put to rest. It’s outdated and it’s sad news like this that makes people resort to finding loopholes around the regional lockdown. Illegal methods. And I don’t want that.
It doesn’t help that Neverland filed in for bankruptcy either. Which is a damn shame. I would import, but region lock prevents me from doing so without dishing out nearly $200+ on a NA 3DS.

The cancellation isn’t what bugs me, it’s the lack of explanation, and the region locking feature of the Nintendo 3DS

While the reason might be obvious, to me it just feels like they’re giving an almost half-hearted apology. I do agree that region locking is also a terrible thing – in fact, it’s the primary reason I do not own a 3DS. Though despite this obstacle, I still believe the fans deserve more than this, and that MarvelousAQL Europe should be more concrete in their statements.

Nintendo, you lost a good amount of money today, and maybe some fans..

I think it’s a hard situation for MAQL – from my limited understanding of these things, I think releasing a statement saying something like ‘the game’s not coming out because Neverland went bankrupt’ could potentially land them in hot water, legally speaking…

      • Hawk Ward

Ack, good point. Confidentiality never ever crossed my mind at all there. Calling out a on a cancelled project as responsibility of another company would almost be like a well renown website calling out on a singular member for abusing their comments functionality.

I can’t still help but stand by what I said though to a certain degree, because the former feels almost like putting a lid on a bottle. Though at least they did have the courtesy to tell a reliable source, rather than stay silent about it.

I apologise if I was out of line at all, ILJG!

        • I ♥ Japanese Games

Not at all! :) Nothing out of line there.

I appreciate the frustration around this. I was really looking forward to it – and it’s always infuriating when companies say – ‘it’s late’ or ‘it’s not coming’, but with no explanation.

I’m a huge fan of Arc System Work’s games – you’d think I’d be used to the wait and disappointment by now! >_<

          • Hawk Ward

Heh, you and me both, ILJG, you and me both :D

  • Victoria

Feel like I’ve just been kicked in the stomach. Can’t believe this, I’ve seen the ‘Let’s Plays’ for this game and have fallen in love with it! I love Harvest Moon and Legend of Zelda! It’s like two of my most favourites merged into one! Please at least put it up for E shop! This game is so popular and they are missing out on a lot of pretty pennies here. I know, I know buy an NA 3DS but some of us can’t afford it especially with the cost of the game thrown on top as well.

  • TheUberSelkie

This is ridiculous. I’ve been waiting three years for this game. Three years!

I don’t even think I can register my disappointment on any scale. Just… Why? Why not release it as is on the eShop? the majority of games are translated in English only, surely it would be wise not to just stick it on there to gain some more sales?

Anyway, the only way I can foreseeably see us getting this is if we bother marvelous enough about it, either that or Rising Star but I don’t see that happening since they dropped everything HM-related to work on A Wonderful Life or something.

So off we go. The fight begins here, I guess.

    • RocKM001 .

Actually the EU license for Harvest Moon was taken away from Rising Star. IIRC Arcsys/ZenUnited “poached” the license for the series during the Dec. 2012 season starting w/ HW:A New Beginning. I mean lets be honest it was one of their best selling series so why would they let it go?

  • color-freak1

that’s really too bad, I wish there was some way they could bring over to Europe!

  • Thatguy

Yeah, that you can release that game in US and cancel in Europe. Seriously, that is a huge, painful slap in the face.
