Dreamcast Petition Gaining Traction

A petition requesting a limited edition of everyone’s favorite Dreamcast console was started 2 years ago, but it was not until 4 weeks ago that that it got 10,000 supporters and 20,000 just a week after. The petition is now nearing its 25,000 goal.

While its success is highly unlikely given Sega’s history (still waiting on that western release of Phantasy Star Online 2), the petition’s creator has additional backup plans in order to make the new Dreamcast a reality. After hitting enough supporters he will contact Sega of Japan sending them plans and designs for the new console. If Sega gives the green light, the petition already has a developer on board, ready to build the units. In case Sega declines, the project will look to crowd funding and will continue from there.

The theoretical console would provide up to four wireless controllers, 720p and 1080p upscaled visuals through HDMI, a built in 500GB HDD, Wireless LAN and a digital online store. Owners would be able to use their games on GD-ROMS or connect to the Dreamcast Classics Store to purchase their favorite titles and play them from the hard disk. In order to minimize financial loss, the consoles would only be made to order.
