htoL#NiQ Release Dates – Physical Release Only in NA

NIS America has announced htoL#NiQ release dates. htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary is a PlayStation Vita exclusive puzzle action gameIt will release Feb 24 in North America and Feb 25 in Europe. North America has the opportunity to buy physical copies of the game exclusively from the NIS Online Store, but apart from that htoL#NiQ will be digital only.

htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary is an original IP from Nippon Ichi Software, who are perhaps best known for their fantastic and distinctively stylish strategy game series Disgaea.

In the depths of a labyrinthine ruin, a young girl named Mion rises from a deep sleep. Lost, alone, and with no memory of how she got here or where her parents are, she is greeted by two fireflies—one composed entirely of light, and another who lurks among the shadows. By shifting between a world of light and a world of shadows, these two fireflies must work together to recover Mion’s memories and lead her out of the ruins, where voracious shadow beasts, ancient machines, and treacherous traps lie in wait to bar her path. But what secrets do Mion’s lost memories contain? What is the connection between her, the ruins, and the fireflies lighting her escape? The answers may reveal a deeper darkness—one that must be faced from within…

The game looks like it will be a great addition to growing library of Japanese games on the PS Vita. However, we are a little disappointed to hear that the title will be digital only except for a small NA physical release only available on the NIS Online Store. Nippon Ichi Software’s lavish visuals and usually excellent gameplay deserve to be pushed out into the world, to be discovered by many. I’m sure htoL#NiQ will sell well to the Japanese game fans who know about the game, but it could fall into obscurity if nobody else can learn about it.

The debate between physical and digital only releases is perhaps one for another time, but one thing is for sure: if I wasn’t able to stumble across some obscure Japanese games when I was younger, browsing the aisles of my local video game retailer, would I even be writing this now? I don’t think so. I’m pleased to know the htoL#NiQ release dates, but I am sad for all the people who won’t have that opportunity to be hooked by it on a whim and surprised into the world of Japanese gaming for the first time…
