Is This The Nintendo NX?

What we know so far is that Nintendo is planning a big surprise with their new console. Nintendo NX is according to some major leaks around the internet, most notably Eurogamer, going to function as a high-powered handheld console. At the same time it will connect to your TV when you come home so you can play on the big screen.

Nintendo NX will feature detachable controllers which you could use when gaming home. The system will use cartridges, most likely with the capacity of 32 GB. What is interesting is that Nintendo plans to utilize a powerful Nvidia Tegra mobile processor, which should give it enough power to be utilized as a home console. Most likely its power will be somewhere between the current Wii U and the Xbox One. Nvidia Tegra was also utilized in Shield Android TV and the Google Pixel C tablet. While the development kits are currently using the X1 version of the chip, the more advanced X2 version is available so Nintendo could also opt-in to use that instead.

Bear in mind that Nintendo still doesn’t aim to compete with the current-gen consoles, but will strive to fill in their own niche, like they used to do in recent years. With the difference that Nintendo won’t be aiming for backwards compatibility like with their previous systems. Consider this and the fact that Nintendo already pulled both their designs for 3DS, DS and Wii consoles from their previous products, like this 1984 console pictured below, featuring Donkey Kong.

What are the expected titles for this new hybrid console? It has been known that Nintendo was handing out their developer kits as of last year and a few games have been in development for quite some time. As of now a few titles have been revealed and those are: The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild (also on the Wii U), Project Sonic 2017, Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest X, Just Dance 2017 and Pikmin 4.

NX is supposedly set to release globally in March 2017, which is a bit later than what we anticipated. Still, we are waiting for an official announcement from Nintendo, as they have yet to make a full reveal of their latest console.
