Witch Boy Magical Piece is on Kickstarter!on September 28, 2015 by Cuppa
Are you a fan of the Magical Girl genre? Do you like gender bender stories? If so, you will definitely want to check out Witch Boy Magical Piece! The BL game is developed by Rosemary House and has had great success as a mobile app game in Japan. Sekai Project is now looking to bring an English version of the game to PC, but they need your help! Sekai Project has launched a Kickstarter page to help fund the translation, port process, Kickstarter fees and re-use of Japanese voice acting. They have currently reached $7,668 with the help of 370 backers.
Witch Boy Magical Piece is a game that targets many kinds of fans, including the visual novel player, the moe doters, the bishounen blushers, the Sailor Moon lovers and the BL fujoshis. In this game you face off against alien invaders referred to as ‘Creatures’. Earth has assembled a crack team of individuals who are able to wield a certain ‘magical power’, which is the only kind of attack able to defeat the aliens! This ‘magical power’ turns the male body female, which brings up a lot of confusing (but very interesting) questions about gender identity and true love. The members of this unconventional team are called ‘Witches’.
Witch boy Magical piece is a Boy’s Love (BL) game for both ladies and gentlemen! The game details an alien invasion by the mysterious “Creatures”, and how the main cast banded together in an attempt to defeat them. These Creatures couldn’t be harmed by conventional methods, such as firearms or any physical attacks, so a private military company has conducted research to successfully reverse-engineer a power from the alien world to have a chance to fight back against the Creatures.
That company, Koutetsu Ouban, developed the “Magical Power” that certain individuals are able to wield in battle; these individuals are called the “Witches.” Even though the Witches’ transformation turns their physical bodies female, that never happens to their hearts. The love scenes are only between male characters, which brings us to the foundation for certain unique aspects of this game: the characters will go on an exploration of their own gender identity, asking themselves “If I had been born a girl, could I have become his girlfriend?” or “Which side of me did he fall in love with, my female self or my male self?”
Sakurai Hinata is the protagonist of this story and the leader of the Magical Pieces squad. He unwillingly becomes a member of the squad after facing pressure from his father’s high-ranking military position. Hinata is nonetheless a very responsible, hardworking young man who undergoes studies at a prestigious high school. He desperately wants to keep his post-transformation female identity a secret from the public, who idolise him as the ‘Magi-King’.
Terada Shiharu is Hinata’s classmate, foster brother, childhood friend and fellow Witch. He is highly enthusiastic and very competitive. Shiharu is unable to transform into a female due to his weak magical power, and so resorts to crossdressing. His lack of magical ability means it is impossible to keep his identity a secret, and so receives a mixed response of encouragement and teasing from the public.
Akira is the Magical Pieces squad’s womanising playboy. Having been gifted with good looks, Akira spent his university days flirting with women rather than studying. He has no interest in world peace, and so the reasoning behind why he became a Witch is unknown. Despite his philandering, there is a rumour going around that claims Akira is in love with someone. His attitude towards men is rather dire, with his attitude towards Hinata being especially disrespectful.
Hirawata Yuki was a researcher involved with the experiments on magical power. One day an accident happened, and now Yuki has become a Witch! His petite female form has made him the most popular Magical Pieces member amongst the public. He has known Hinata for ten years, and is often the target of his admiration. A quiet, gentle man, Yuki is also a cat lover. He is trying hard to kick his smoking habit after adopting a stray cat.
Misao Isana is a gentle giant. Although naïve, Isana is extremely powerful, described as having strength never before seen in a Witch candidate. He has impressive intellect and works as Yuki’s assistant at the laboratory. Isana also has a huge appetite and is constantly snacking on something in-between mealtimes.
Itsuki is a mysterious young boy with unimaginable power. Calm and witty, he proves to be a useful ally against the Creatures. Like any young boy, Itsuki can also be rather shy, sulky or jealous at times. He also seems to be looking for ‘something’ that he lost…
Witch Boy Magical Piece has some interesting mechanics to make it stand out from standard visual novels. One such mechanic is the ‘connection’ feature. The closer you are to another character, the stronger they will fight when paired with Hinata. Likewise a more distant relationship with the pair will result in a huge reduction of power, possibly putting the two characters’ lives at risk. Another feature is the choice of items to equip. Some items are only available for certain characters, and others can only be won after beating certain scenarios. This mechanic encourages players to customise the squad to suit their tastes and create the most powerful team they can!
If you like the sound of this game, or if you simply agree that such a game should be available for people to play, then I urge you to back the project on Kickstarter. The project has 20 days left, with a goal of $57,000 to reach! The BL market is especially sparse, and so adding a unique and fun game like Witch Boy Magical Piece to the genre’s small numbers would be a much welcomed outcome. We should also remember that this game has magic, cute girls, handsome men, humour, crossdressing and true love… What is there not to like? I hope we get to see the Magical Pieces squad’s antics on our PC screens soon!
