Yoshida: PS4 Shadow of the Colossus a “Remake”, Not a Remaster

During the Sony press conference, a PS4 Shadow of the Colossus was announced with a trailer. It’s being handled by Bluepoint, who’ve made many great remasters for both PS3 & PS4, including the HD versions of ICO & Shadow of the Colossus for the former. But this PS4 version is a remake, not just a remaster.

 

It’s been a matter of confusion for some people since the announcement. Bluepoint are well-known for their high quality remasters, but Shadow of the Colossus was looking a lot different to the previous version in the trailer shown. It was clearly using new lighting, and new models — but without a HUD on display it was tricky to tell just how different it would be.

 

 

Shuhei Yoshida-san, President of SIE Worldwide, has clarified a bit more about what Shadow of the Colossus PS4 will be. The content will remain the same from the original game, and they chose to work with Bluepoint because of their familiarity with them and confidence in their abilities thanks to their previous work on remasters for the company. Even though the content will be the same, the game will have new assets, and even reworked controls — one aspect of the original that is often complained about as being clunky.

 

 

The interview with Famitsu (our translation):

――つぎに、『ワンダと巨像』についてうかがいます。これは、リマスター版なのでしょうか、それともリメイク版なのでしょうか?
Then, I would like to talk about « Shadow of the Colossus ». Is this a remaster or a remake ?

吉田 リメイクです。今回は、ゲーム内容はオリジナル版といっしょですが、アセットはすべて作り直しています。PS4の時代に『ワンダと巨像』を作るなら、こういう技術が使えるだろうと。Bluepointは、PS3向けの『ICO』と『ワンダと巨像』のリマスター版を作った開発会社なんです。だから中身はよく知っています。
Yoshida: It’s a remake. The content of the game is the same as in the original version but we are remaking all the assets. If we’re making “Shadow of the Colossus” for PS4, that’s what we should do. Bluepoint was the development studio behind the remaster of “Ico” and “Shadow of the Colossus” on PS3 so they know about it quite well.

 

――ゲーム内容はPS2版と同じなのですね。
So the content is the same as in the PS2 version ?

吉田 同じですが、操作系などは時間とともにユーザーさんの好みが変わっていますので、現代風に遊べる工夫を入れようと思っています。もちろん、オリジナルの感覚でも遊んでいただけますが。原作のよさを、いまの技術で表現します。上田さん(上田文人氏)は、今回はあまり関わっていません。
Yoshida: It’s the same but since the controls (among other things) and the preferences of the players have changed over time, we will also be modernising the game. Of course, there will still be the same impression as in the original game. We want to express the greatness of the game with current technology. This time, Ueda-san (M. Fumito Ueda) won’t be too much involved.

 

Shadow of the Colossus will be coming to PlayStation 4 at some point in 2018.
