Yuri!!! on Ice Co-Creator Gives The King and the Skater Plot Summary
Episode 6 of Yuri!!! on Ice saw Thai skater Phichit Chulanont draw inspiration from The King and the Skater for his short programme. Mitsuo Kubo, co-creator of the series, as well as storyboard artist and original character designer, shed some light on social media in the form of a full plot summary.
The King and the Skater is a fictional movie musical popular among figure skaters in the show. Here’s Kubo’s detailed explanation:

As the music in Phichit’s programme – ‘Shall We Skate?’- suggested, it’s based on The King and I, but with ice skating, magic, and card games thrown in. If it got made as a weird Yuri!!! on Ice spin-off movie, I’d watch it. Kubo really put some detail into it, going so far as to include the film’s reception and criticism!
All the little touches that build up around the show are part of what makes it so fun. The official Yuri!!! on Ice PR instagram also updates with the characters’ Instagram pictures, for example! It’s a great show – I’m definitely looking forward to the next episode!
